Message from the director

iemori_kyoujyu.jpgI was appointed as Director, Mukogawa Women's University Institute for World Health Development that was newly established in January, 2006.
Women, who are healthier and beautiful, are generally enjoying longer life expectancy than men. WHO reported that the average life expectancy of the Japanese women is 86 years old and it is the best in the world.

Soy isoflavones are female sex hormone to eat and add years to the life of women and also of men with the weak estrogenic activity. Our world-wide epidemiological survey has proven that people eating soy beans a lot and excreting more isoflavones into their 24-hour urine samples appear younger and healthier among 61 populations in 25 countries. The beauty of these women much depends on beautiful skin with enough blood supply so that their circulation not only in the skin but also in the brain, heart and kidneys is all good enough for their longevity. Men with genome different from women are unable to live as long as women, but will hopefully live long like Japanese women if men eat enough soy isoflavones. Our life is not fixed with our genome, the activity of which can be controlled by better eating habits and life style. We would further study to make use of this concept of "genome plus" for World Health Development for all, even for those with disadvantageous genes to enjoy healthy long life.

Common diseases in the aged are now called as life style related disease because their causes are known to depend on life style. Genetic factors are also involved in some of these diseases.
However, our extensive basic, clinical and epidemiological studies indicate nutrition and physical activity can overcome the genomic influence, that is, "genome plus(+)" factors are determinants of the risk reduction and prevention of life styled related diseases.
Our institute contributes for all to be healthier by this concept of "genome+".
